Exodus 20:12
In the midst of the ten commandments' list of prohibitions, comes this incredibly positive instruction to honour our father and mother.
The command embodies a 'high' view of human life and relationships. It also embodies a gender equality that even today is not universally recognised and it contains an intergenerational dimension that shows God's plan for his people is made for the long term. Finally the command contains a promise for a secure and stable society which comes as a consequence of honouring our father and mother.
